64th St Community Garden

Our Goals

We are located on the community borderline of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge at 373 64th Street between 4th and 3rd Avenues in the Borough of Brooklyn. The Garden goal is to allow the community to increase their ability to maintain an urban green space. This green space would be preserved by our youth, community groups and volunteers. The official season of the garden opening and closing is from Early Spring to Late Fall.

Open to the public Saturdays 10AM-5PM

Fruit trees and herb wheel open to the public

Beekeeping for local honey

Beautiful urban greenspace

Our focus

Our garden is managed by a Steering Committee which consists of community volunteers, Not-For-Profit groups and your fellow neighbors.
The members maintain the Garden’s focus and purposes that include the following:

Providing the opportunity for local residents to grow vegetables and flowers.

We have over 30 member beds for personal gardening. Multiple wildflower beds and an herb wheel open to the community.

Beautifying the neighborhood

Our garden was once a garbage strewn vacant lot. It is now a vibrant urban greenspace where community members can gather and enjoy.

Creating a tranquil space for residents

All are welcome to spend time in our greenspace during open hours. Have a picnic, enjoy the blooming flowers and buzz of our honeybees.

Community Relations

Creating and maintaining a relationship with schools, youths in the neighborhood, Not for Profit organizations like, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Center for Family Life, the NYPD, FDNY and DEP.

Provide a Gathering Space

The garden hosts numerous events and celebrations throughout the year, such as potlucks and Spring and Fall festivals.

Education

Creating the opportunity to learn about composting, weeding, proper cultivating procedures while participating in a community effort to expand the beauty of the garden.

Our 2022 Season

At the beginning of the 2022 season, we replaced every member bed, and focused on native wildflower planting in our communal flower beds. We welcomed many new members who have all brought unique perspectives to our community. We have a thriving population of honeybees, and are bringing back events for the first time since the pandemic!

Our History

In the 1950s, a block of houses was torn down under eminent domain to make way for what is now the BQE. The lot that was left eventually sat vacant.

In 1999, a group of neighbors sparked the momentum to transform a neighborhood dumping ground into an urban green space.  They were successful, and since then it has been the 64th Street Community Garden.

Interested in becoming a member? All garden beds are full this season but please reach out to be put on our list for next season!
